CloudPress the cloud-based marketing platform from Flat6Labs Cairo Spring 2013 cycle has been acqui-hired by News Corp, the world’s largest media conglomerate.

Gaining significant media attention with this Cairo startup being successfully acquihired by NewsCorp - many questions still loom about what exactly an ‘acqui-hire’ means. An acqui-hire, also known as talent acquisition, is the process of acquiring a company to recruit its employees, without necessarily showing an interest in scaling the company itself. The process entailed that the 3 founders, Mohamed El-Zohairy, Allen Chen and Bobby Mathews are to be hired by News Corp with CloudPress as a company to be terminated, as reported by TechCrunch.

“We learned a lot from Flat6Labs… it connects you to all the right resources” explained El-Zohairy.
As Flat6Labs provides seed funding, strategic mentorship, a creative workspace, a multitude of perks, entrepreneurship-focused business training. Through Flat6Labs program, CloudPress’ team was mentored by Kelly Smith and Ayman Ashour. Being an entrepreneur himself, Kelly expressed how impressed he was from the teams’ ability and skill in an interview with Geek Wire.

The 3 founders met at the University of Washington where El-Zohairy earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science.

After completion of the Flat6Labs Cairo’s program, El-Zohairy made the connection with News Corp via Nick Bell, Senior Vice President of Product.
“We met with Nick several times and discussed the product, he liked it and was impressed with the team” said El-Zohairy. “After which we discussed the terms” he added.

El-Zohairy will now hold the position of Director of product engineering and his other two partners the title of Director of Platform Engineering at News Corp.

“Although we don’t count this deal as an exit for Flat6Labs Cairo as it doesn’t entail significant financial returns, it’s thrilling for the whole family here to realize that Flat6Labs selected and help train great talent and that CloudPress was a stepping stone for a remarkable career leap the founders were able to achieve through this process.” Said Ahmed El Alfi, Founder of Flat6Labs and Chairman of Sawari Ventures.
It’s amazing how CloudPress’ founders and other successful Flat6Labs Cairo’s companies are gaining recognition for the talented entrepreneurs in egypt.
We at Flat6Labs wish the best for the three founders with their new career move, and we look forward to more inspiring stories to come from Flat6Labs Cairo and the Egyptian start-up ecosystem.
